  • The terms "storage" and "memory" refer to the parts of a digital computer that retain physical state (data) for some interval of time, possibly even after electrical power to the computer is turned off. Where both terms are in use, "memory" is generally used for the faster forms, and "storage" for the slower forms.
  • Memory is the electronic holding place for instructions and data that your computer's microprocessor can reach quickly. When your computer is in normal operation, its memory usually contains the main parts of the operating system and some or all of the application programs and related data that are being used. Memory is often used as a shorter synonym for random access memory (RAM).
  • The area of a computer where programs and data are stored.
  • This is the component that holds recently accessed data for the CPU to have quick access to. It is much faster than reading from a hard drive, so having a lot of RAM makes it quick to retrieve recently accessed files, applications, and other data. All programs must be run through RAM before they can be used. RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is typically measured in megabytes. My Memory Page may also be helpful.
  • The circuitry in a computer that stores information. See also RAM and ROM. memory-resident
  • Electronic circuits which store data, permanently (Read Only Memory/ROM) or as long as they have power (Random Access Memory/RAM).
